FSU names three faculty as Distinguished Research Professor

Florida State University has bestowed the title of Distinguished Research Professor on three outstanding faculty members for their exemplary research productivity and contributions to their fields.

“Outstanding national and international scholarly output and creativity is a cornerstone of a thriving research enterprise,” said Vice President for Research Stacey S. Patterson. “I am honored to recognize three of our outstanding faculty as Distinguished Research Professors this year who raise the bar with their extraordinary contributions to their fields.”

The Distinguished Research Professor award recognizes outstanding research and/or creative activity of eligible Florida State University faculty currently at the rank of full professor.

Recipients receive a one-time award of $10,000 and can use the title Distinguished Research Professor throughout their tenure at FSU. The title is only surpassed by that of the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor Award.

This year’s recipients, who were honored at the university’s spring faculty awards ceremony, are:

Matthew Goff, Religion, College of Arts and Sciences

Matthew Goff is a prolific scholar of Early Judaism and Biblical studies. His research has involved close readings of ancient texts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls. He has training in multiple languages, including Biblical Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Middle Egyptian, Ge’ez (Classical Ethiopic), German, French and Latin. Goff joined the Department of Religion in 2005. He completed an M.T.S degree in 1997 at Harvard Divinity School and finished his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 2002. His most recent book is “The Apocrypha: A Guide” (Oxford, 2024). Goff’s current book project is on demons and monsters in ancient Judaism and early Christianity.

Qing-Xiang Sang, Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Arts and Sciences

Quing-Xiang Sang is a highly regarded biochemist whose work on cell development is aimed at understanding cancer formation and treatment. She has generated significant research funding from a range of sources, including the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Department of Defense, the State of Florida, and the National Institutes of Health. Sang, who received her doctoral degree from Georgetown University Medical Center, currently holds the Endowed Professorship in Cancer Research. She joined FSU in 1993.

Antonio Terracciano, Geriatrics, College of Medicine

Antonio Terracciano is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert on the relationship between personality traits and dementia. His research accomplishments include more than 370 peer reviewed publications, many in prominent journals across psychosocial and biomedical sciences. He has received significant funding from the National Institutes of Health as well as the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. He holds degrees from Università degli Studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli and Università degli Studi di Cagliari, both in Italy. He joined the FSU College of Medicine in 2012.
